How is your IELTS score calculated?

Test takers are given a score for each component of the test – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The individual scores are then averaged and rounded to produce an overall band score. Let’s know how is your IELTS score calculated.

IELTS Band Scale

There is no pass or fail; IELTS is scored on a nine-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specified English skill. Overall IELTS band scores are calculated in round off the nearest half band. The following rounding convention applies: if the average of the four skills ends in 0.25, it is rounded up to the upper half range, and if it ends in 5.75, it is rounded up to the whole range next. The 9 score bands scale is described as below:

9 – Expert user

Has full operational command of the language: appropriate, precise and fluent with full understanding.

 8 – Very good user

Has a fully working command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and mismatches. Misunderstandings can arise in unfamiliar situations. Also, handles complex and detailed argument well.

 7 – Good user

Has a working command of the language, but with occasional inaccuracies, mismatches and misunderstandings in certain situations. Generally manages complex language well and understands detailed arguments.

 6 – Competent user

Has a generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, mismatches and misunderstandings. Can use and comprehend fairly multifaceted language, mainly in familiar situations.

 5 – Modest user

Has partial command of the language, copes with the general meaning in most situations, but is likely to make many mistakes. Must be able to handle basic communication in own area.

 4 – Limited user

The basic skill is limited to familiar situations. Often have comprehension and expression problems. Not able to use complex language.

 3 – Extremely limited user

Communicate in very familiar situations and only understand the general meaning. Communication problems occur frequently.

 2 – Intermittent user

No real communication is possible, except for the simplest information using separate words or short formulas in familiar situations and meeting immediate needs. There are many difficulties in understanding spoken and written English.

 1 – Non user

Has essentially no ability to use language beyond possibly a few isolated words.

 0 – Didn’t appear any test before.

No assessable information provided.
