Do you remember how excited you were the first time you held your iPhone in your hand? When you pull off the plastic seal and touch the glossy white casing? When you first touch the case, you already feel the importance, quality, and meaning. It is no coincidence. Apple carefully curated its product packaging to live up to its brand image, delivering quality product innovation and customer experience.
Packaging plays an important role in the perceived value of a product and, in general. The packaging industry has not changed much in recent years while comparing to the constant innovation in wearable technology like cardboard sleeve packaging. With so many packages and boxes on the market today, finding the best packaging solution for your product can be difficult. Let’s look at the different types of packaging you can use to enhance your product and customer experience.
Corrugated box for electronics
Corrugated cardboard is a paper-based material that is lightweight but very strong. It can easily be cut to create custom shapes and textures. These properties make it an ideal material for custom packaging. Moreover, it is made from recycled pulpwood or waste paper after polishing and bleaching. There are different types of corrugated cardboard, each suitable for different types of packaging.
SBS board (or solid sulfate bleach board) can be used to package cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, milk and juice, personal care products, and frozen foods. Those who choose Kraft paperboard packaging or CUK (Coated Unbleached Kraft) prefer the look of a natural, environmentally friendly recycled paper that can be used in similar packaging applications.
Boxes made of corrugated cardboard
The box made of corrugated cardboard is simply the so-called corrugated cardboard. Many people believe that corrugated cardboard is used to make large shipping boxes, shoe boxes, and storage boxes. Many people don’t know that different corrugated cardboard boxes differ in their durability and strength. However, some corrugated materials are easily recognizable. How do you identify this material? Through its corrugated media (also known as grooves). Identifying corrugated materials is easy. It consists of three layers of paper: an outer liner, an inner liner, and a corrugated medium (also called corrugation). The corrugated medium gives it strength and stiffness.
The main raw material for the corrugated board is usually waste paper, which is produced on large, high-precision machines called corrugators. These corrugated sheets are often used as raw materials for cellulose fibers and are recycled. There are different corrugated boards: single-sided corrugated board, double-sided corrugated board (single wall), double-wall, and triple wall. They can be used to manufacture packaging with different properties, characteristics, and thicknesses
Plastic box for extra protection
Plastics are used in everything from spacecraft to paper clips. Some traditional materials such as wood, leather, glass, and ceramics have been replaced by plastics.
Plastic packaging has many advantages; it can be recycled and is generally more durable than cardboard boxes. The sealing of plastic packaging helps maintain food quality and avoid contamination issues. Plastic packaging is also less fragile and can be stored with food in harsh conditions.
Another reason plastic is the packaging material of choice is that products can be displayed from all angles without opening the packaging. It is also flexible and lightweight and can be covered with film or coating to enhance the appearance of the package.
Sturdy Rigid cases
You might wonder what boxes are used for packaging luxury items like iPhones, Rolexes, Tiffany, and Marc Jacobs. It feels like cardboard. However, you can’t be sure because of its sturdy and luxurious look.
The rigid box or sleeve packaging is made of high-density cardboard and is four times thicker than a normal folding box. The simplest example of a hard case is the two-piece hard case that holds an Apple iPhone or iPad.
Rigid boxes are arguably a more expensive category than cardboard or corrugated cardboard. Hard cases are generally made by hand and do not require expensive molds or bulky machines. They also tend to be more expensive to ship because they cannot be folded and therefore, tend to be bulkier.
These logo printed boxes are often used to sell luxury cosmetics, jewelry, technology, and high-end fashion. It’s easy to incorporate features like platforms, windows, lids, hinges, compartments, domes, and embossing into the hard case.
Chipboard based packaging
Chipboard packaging is used in industries, such as electronics, medical, food, cosmetics, and beverages. Particleboard is essentially corrugated cardboard made from recycled paper. The reason is that it is easy to cut, fold and shape. Moreover, you can use it to package products economically.
It has different densities, and its density determines its strength. If printing directly on a particleboard, the particleboard should be sulfuric acid bleached. On the other hand, CCNB (clay-coated pressing) is treated to increase material durability.
Cardboard is a lightweight material used in many food products, such as cereal, cookies, and tissue boxes, so companies that handle heavy loads cannot use cardboard packaging. Particleboard is also prone to weakening in storage environments with high moisture content, which can lead to discoloration and swelling.
